FAFME expands as Forging Africa’s Future Mechanical Engineer. Pretty straightforward, the intent is to shape the budding mechanical engineers of the present into the established mechanical engineers of the future.

What is FAFME?
It’s a project organized by the Nigerian Institute of Mechanical Engineers (NIMECHE) in partnership with the Royal Academy of Engineering, United Kingdom to allow young Mechanical Engineering students and recent graduates from tertiary institutions tender innovative ideas. The project is aimed at bridging the gap between the gown and the industry through capacity building.
What is the FAFME Design Competition all about?
Well, the FAFME Design competition is a challenge designed to bring up young mechanical innovators. The objective is to help them take their ideas from obscurity to the limelight, where these ideas are certain to gain entrepreneurial value. Of course, there is the added plus of developing the capacities of these innovators and also solving socio-economic problems in the country.
Since when has this Competition been held?
It started in 2016, and the second edition held in 2018. This is the third edition.
What are the requirements for registration?
You must be a Mechanical Engineering student or a graduate from the last 5 years.
Any particular skills I need to have before I can consider registering for this competition?
Yes. You must be innovative. You must be a critical thinker with the ability to proffer solutions to problems.
Do I need to possess any hard skills?
Nah. You do not. Just your brain.
Can I apply as an individual or must it be as a team?
You must apply as a team of individuals, and each team can contain a maximum of 5 team members. Each member of your team must satisfy the requirements for registration.
What do we get if we win?
The prize money for winning this competition is €1500. That’s about #600,000.
Are there prizes for runners up?
Yes, there are remunerations for runners up, including free trainings. And if your idea doesn’t win but is still a great idea, it could get sponsored. This is one of those competitions where there isn’t any actual losing, as long as you bring something brilliant to the table.
What is the task for this year’s competition?
“How can Engineers Solve the Problems of the 21st Century”. This year, for your chance to win €1500, you are expected to come up with an engineering solution to any key problem of the 21st century world. Of course, this solution must have the capacity to change the world.

Yes! You can apply now. Applications close on the 29th of February, 2020.
How do I go about it?
The first thing you need to do is visit http://www.nimp.com.ng to register as a mentee.
When that is done, proceed to download the application form at http://www.nimp.com.ng/fafme-application-form. Fill the form, and then submit it alongside your pitch deck and video presentation to email@example.com. And, that’s it.
