The second semester of the 2020/2021 session resumed on the 26th of July, 2021 with only a few of us knowing that it had really resumed. Alas, it’s the fifth week! How does time fly so fast? Apparently, not too many envisaged that things would kickstart as early as it did. More people just reawakened to the reality of another season. If you don’t mind, I’d like to say, happy resumption!
A situation that inspired me when composing this editorial had to do with the grit found in all students of the department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Ibadan. There is this spirit of going again even when the past was great or otherwise. My interest in this has always made me admire the calibre of people around me, from students to lecturers and those who are just in mech. Truth be told, it takes a smart person to set out to study systematic motion in various systems in order to make it do what is desired, to engineer it to function how it would be more useful.
To the freshers, Physics and Chemistry may have released results but that is not all to you. There is still a lot ahead and you are just good enough for it. Work with seniors, work with your mates and allow yourself to be integrated into the NIMechE UI family. To the sophomores, you have been in this system for just a bit more than a session (pardon me for terming 2020 “just a bit”). You are now fully in the faculty of Technology. It is not time to deter from the goal but to find your standing appropriately.
The 300L guys are in the middle of it, and to you, I say, carry on and do not get carried away. As you move on, appreciate your strengths and improve on them for the sake of your future. To the penultimate students on industrial training, this is the time to make the most of the structure you desire for your career. No matter where you find yourself, put in your best to come out smarter and with more connections and skills. To my fellow finalists, it’s the last lap, and I know you know what that means. Push through till it is over and leave a good memory. I believe in every single one of us, and we would make it through.
The current administration has started working, as a number of events have rolled out already. The HOD’s cup which held on the 12th and 13th of August respectively, showed a commitment to sports and an organized game. Also, the picnic, tagged, MekFest 2.0, was pumped with a lot of excitement and it worked a lot of ease into stressed trusses. Big kudos to all executives, and the executive president, Salawu Habeeblai, at this time. We anticipate the upcoming events.
The clubs are gradually coming back up and they are to be maximized. Two major clubs, the design club and the CodeGear club have started to gather members. To every member of NIMechE UI, these clubs are for us and we just have to gain the amazing gains from them.
We have started this ride and would keep on going till we smile after the tide. Keep winning, guys!
