Welcome back to the NIMechE-UI Press intern of the week series. We couldn’t bring an interview to your phone’s screen last week due to some high-level technical difficulties. For that, we apologize.
This week, we bring to you Aregbesola Sadiq of 400 level Mech. He’s somewhere out there chopping oil money and gaining valuable life experiences. We thought long and hard about which of those two things to bring to you and, upon careful consideration, decided that the latter is what you actually need right now. Enjoy.
Can we meet you?
I’m Aregbesola Dolapo Sadiq, a 400 Level student of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. I’m an intern at Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCO)
That’s a big one! Oil and gas people. But, considering UI’s calendar, the time you got your placement doesn’t fall into their regular recruitment period. Can you tell us how you secured the placement?
Na God. I applied 3months prior to my start date. Below is the requirement so the 300level students can start getting things together.
Name of University/institution of higher learning
Matriculation Number/ student ID number
Course of study
Required duration/period for internship
Scanned copy of official letter/ form from higher institution
Current Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)/Grade Point Average (GPA)
I imagine that this will be quite useful for our 300 level guys. But did anyone help you edge ahead in the race?
Yh, my dad’s friend.
Thank God for him. Now, tell us about SNEPCO; how has it been so far?
Shell is a company that engages in the exploration and production of crude oil. It is a fun place to be but it can also be a scary place to be at the same time.
I’m guessing you’ve experienced the fun and the scary part? Give us some gist.
Well, Shell tries as much as possible to ease the stress of their workers by introducing fun activities. An example is the away day. So, I can say thanks to our abnormal calendar I got there at the right time. As for the scary times, January is when the company is sets goals for 2020. Everyone is busy with their jobs and nobody has time for interns. They basically just give us a few things to engage us.
How’s that scary? You must like work o.
You know at some point it becomes difficult to be without supervision; it has an effect on you. But it’s not like we get completely neglected, it’s just that this period is really busy.
You mentioned an away day. What’s that?
It’s just a day of fun. No work, and everyone goes to a place they can relax.
Now that’s really cool. So Sadiq, if there’s one thing you’ve learnt from Shell, what would it be?
On the academic front, a few software. Generally; humility and being good at what you do.
Humility; would you like to expatiate?
There are a lot of guys here that have made it. They basically have little or no worries, yet they relate with us normally. There isn’t so much high-level definition. I like that and it has taught me that no matter where you get to in life, humility is important.
I imagine that will turn out to be a very valuable lesson. As for academics, what software?
AutoCAD, Hysys, PDMS and the rest. PowerPoint and Excel as well.
Cool. What message do you have for mechites in lower levels?
Work smart. Just work smart.
Any final shout outs?
A big shout-out to arsenal fans and mech gang. I pray this IT is fruitful for everyone.
Thanks, Sadiq. We appreciate the time.
Thank you for staying with us. See you next week.
